Clinical Consultation: Charting a New Course

With many people, it’s fairly easy to figure out how they can feel safe, connected and in control. With some, especially people who have experienced trauma, we need to be more thoughtful. When an individual behaves in challenging ways, this process is even more critical.

AP’s Trauma Responsive Care clinical consultations help agencies respond to people who are difficult to serve. A two-hour session offers insights and brainstorming to apply trauma-responsive strategies. Lara Palay is an independently licensed clinical social worker and clinical supervisor with three decades of experience.

She uses our TRC Healing Plan as a guideline for the consultation. The Healing Plan incorporates positive psychology, emerging neuroscience and trauma-responsive principles.

The clinical consultation helps agencies change the way their staff behaves. It puts the emphasis for change on staff, not on the individual. We believe that when staff change how they behave, individuals do better, feel better and ultimately live better. That makes things better for everyone.

During a clinical consultation, our agency will…

  • Learn more about mental health diagnoses an individual has

  • Create strategies for applying the principles of trauma-responsive care to help an individual feel safe, connected and in control

  • Develop coordinated approaches to use these strategies consistently

  • Plan for difficult times of the year, such as holidays or anniversaries, that cause individuals special distress

How a clinical consultation work?

The clinical consultation itself takes about two hours. Lara facilitates a discussion involving about eight to ten people-those who know the individual best.

Who should be there?

It is important that professionals such as psychologists and behavioral support specialist attend and are prepared to provide the group with some general diagnostic and clinical information.
